Default Forum database crash...

Hi all:

Well, I have some major apologizing to do. The subject here was a lie... there was no database crash, there was an idiot behind the wheel, who wasn't paying close enough attention. Because there is a new major version of our forums software available, I had set up a "beta" forum where I was going to test the upgrade process, to see what would break. Part of this process involves duplicating our forum's database.

mysql -u admin -p forums4 < forums.sql

Guess what the problem with this statement is? There is none. The problem is that in our forum backup file, forums.sql, I had forgot to edit an important line that specifies the database. Therefore, because the backup was still pointed at our live database, it was overwritten.

I cannot express how much an idiot I feel like. We have nightly backups of our site, so the forum database was 18 hours old (if I just waited another six hours before screwing something up), and all of Monday's posts have been completely purged, with no chance of recovery.

Ugh. Huge apologies peeps, I have no idea how I had a brain fart like that :/

Rob

Wow. Just...wow. Sometimes, Rob, your honesty is refreshing - and a great source of my amusement.

Kind of. I set up a beta site, but for some reason the URL I set up won't work, so I have that to figure out. I can't deal with it right now since I'm kind of backlogged and have a lot of work to do, but I know this is a mistake I'll never be making again, that's for sure.

No worries Rob, glad that you had those other backups handy for just such an occasion!

Yes, at least we have reliable and regular backups, that's all I can say. If the database was 18 days old rather than 18 hours old, I would have had a heart attack I think.
