Default Changes to Our Advertising System

Over the weekend, we moved our advertising system from our servers to a third-party, which means that going forward, the ads you see on our site will not be loading from our server as has been the case for as long as the site's been around. We made this move not for performance reasons, but because of a stubborn issue that I spent countless hours on and could never manage to fix. So, I took the easy and most common-sense road out.

The ad system, OpenX, remains the same, but rather than us host the code on our server, we're taking advantage of the company's "Hosted" program, which is just as it sounds. OpenX already has the software, so we simply moved our campaigns over to its servers, and as a result, that stubborn issue I mentioned before should be long gone... gone forever *crosses fingers*.

The reason I am talking about such a boring issue is because this is the first time we've ever moved our ads to a third-party server, so I'd really like some input if you notice any slowdown whatsoever, or any other issue related to our advertising. Over the course of the past couple of weeks, I've dabbled a bit with the performance and it seems good so far, but as I'm just one person, it's hard to settle on the fact that it should be fine for everyone.

So, if you experience any random slow-downs or anything of the sort, please don't hesitate to let us know. We can't fix issues that we ourselves don't experience!

Thanks guys!

Default What ads?

I don't see the ads which I normally do (or any ads at all). I don't have an ad blocker on this computer, so unless this is part of the transition you already have already have an issue...

Good luck with your advertising woes.

All pages have four ads around the side of the site, top, right, bottom and left, and all of these are being run through OpenX's hosted service. I'm hoping the fact that you don't see the ads doesn't slow the site down for you, because in previous experience, if no ads display, the site ends up loading slower.

I am hoping that issues that might exist now do work themselves out, because we deployed the new system right away, and it might take time to propogate - or something like that. So far I haven't had personal issues, and neither has the staff, so hopefully things will be working properly for you soon (not that I'm concerned if you see the ads, but I don't want it to slow the performance of the site down for you).

I hope this issue can work itself out... the solution we're on is by far the simplest to use

Alright, moving to this hosted provider might not have been the best decision we ever went through with. Because my Internet is generally slow (latency-wise), I didn't really realize that our site was slower than most others to load, and thanks to Jamie's investigations, our ad software host looked to be the problem.

Thus, we've just moved back to our own hosted version, and in quick tests, the site feels a LOT faster. I hope it does to you guys as well, and if so, please let me know. Likewise, if some problem has risen from this, please let me know.

Thanks!

Didn't notice any issues before. The site loaded with very good times. And it feels just as good now. Around 2 seconds to load the home page. Sometimes maybe 3, which I attribute to my connection.

I find those times very good.

I'm glad it's been speedy for you. My connection as mentioned isn't too great, but if I hard refresh the front page, it finishes at about 1.915s for me, a major improvement from what I am sure was about 4s before.

This kind of thing matters to some search engines, so it's important that we make the site as fast as possible. That, and a faster site has no real downsides that I can see ;-)

I never had a problem, maybe cause I'm on Fiber and FF5 but either glad to hear it's better for every one all around.

I see an immediate difference but then again, my connection is terrible.
