Default Spammer epidemic

Alright, the spamming here is getting out of control. We used to get two spammers per month if we were lucky, but over the past month, that's been ramped up to multiple per day. We have spammers posting threads to shady sites, editing their "homepage" in their profile to other shady websites, and others signing up to wait for a couple of weeks before posting. Ugh.

For those that frequent other forums, is this a noticeable problem, or are we getting hit the worst? We haven't changed a single configuration option on our forums in the past half-year, so it's not like we did something that opened up the floodgates.

It's getting tedious dealing with, though.

I do seem to notice it more on these forums but it seems to be affecting other ones as well.

I notice a lot of spam on other forums. It seems to depend on spammers discovering vulnerabilities and exploiting them and how fast they can be resolved.

yeah and the grammar is so bad, it's gotta be a computer doing all this. Maybe there's another security check that could be put in when registering?

I'm sure it's bots. Nobody except the strung out...iest...of the strung out would put that many incoherant words together.

Really, its getting a bit annoying, I think we notice it more since there is only about 20 or so actually active members, IE its a small forum :P

Oh yeah, it's definitely computers doing a lot of it. I don't know if vBulletin does this, but ensuring the email address is valid during registration works wonders.

When there is a human at the other end being paid by the hour to create accounts, it doesn't matter what preventative measures you put in. The bad grammar is often a google/babelfish translation from chinese or some such.

Throwing a captcha engine at them won't help much either, since many algorithms are available to crack them, just look at the automated download engines for Rapidshare and Megaupload like Jdownloader. Also, if you create enough accounts with a site, you can setup answers for the questions and such quite easily. The only way to minimise the affect is to put disallow links on member pages in the robot.txt file and rel="nofollow" on all external links via template on the forum to prevent indexing via search engines. Still leaves us with dead links to clean up and 'members' to ban, in which case it's business as usual.

If there was a magic button or program that'll stop all spam, don't you think that; A) All sites would be using it and, B) the person that created the tool would be very rich...

Some spam is done by computers; some is done manually by people that have made a career of it Inevitably they overcome anything you put in place. However, When I've had forums I have found temporary success with captchas ("are you human?", for example), email validation (since often they just put in something like [email protected]), and IP blacklisting. You can get up-to-date IP blacklists from http://www.stopforumspam.com/.
